You may remember we ran a story on this blog about the Indian spice curcumin that is proving remarkable in stopping cancer cells from progressing.
Cancer and curcumin
Curcumin is an active ingredient found in turmeric, which is the yellow spice used commonly in Asian cooking, and is known for its anti-inflammatory powers. There has been a lot of research into this herb for helping within western medicine. Studies into this ingredient include those for arthritis relief, cardiac and other illnesses that involve inflammation, as well as the more recent studies into cancer.
Numerous studies and papers have been released by large cancer centers extolling the virtues of this uncomplicated herb. Curcumin is able to sort cancer cells from those unaffected and kill only the cancer cells, whilst at the same time increasing the cellular health of the healthy cells. (Texas University Anderson Cancer Center 2011). More recently Zheijian Provincial People’s Hospital has noted that curcumin can induce cell death within tripe negative breast cancer cells – which is a type of cancer that defies conventional therapy.
Cardiovascular Disease and curcumin
Concerning helping with cardiovascular illnesses research includes one study from the Ohio State University, where subjects were given a supplement containing 80mg of curcumin. Results showed that the curcumin supplementation lowered plasma triglyceride levels, salivary amylase, and plasma soluble intercellular adhesion molecule levels while at the same time increasing salivary radical scavenging capacities, plasma catalase activities and plasma nitric oxide. All these effects show that a low dose can encourage a variety of health benefits in middle aged people.
