Rice Bran Husks and Their Possible Health Benefits.

More than half the population of the world sees rice as part of their staple diet; however it seems that the outer rice bran husks, that are commonly thrown away, may actually be the part that could have numerous health benefits. Researchers in Colorado have been given a grant from the Gates Foundation, to look into how this food stuff may be used as a medicine also – mainly for helping with digestive complications.
According to researchers there is a lot of untapped potential for using certain food stuffs for medicinal purposes. This is partly due to the immune system reacting to not just bacteria and viruses, but also to plant compounds and food stuffs. The grant given to the researchers at Colorado University will allow this little looked into area be more fully researched allowing much more in depth details to emerge about the many possibilities.
The rice bran husks that are primarily being looked into are typically discarded due to how rancid they go, but being full of lipids and fatty acids they are actually very beneficial to health. Previous research has shown how a whole rice bran supplement limited the weakness for a strain of salmonella in mice, suggesting the possibilities for this in humans is also possible. Research has also shown they may be helpful in cardiovascular terms, and also for fighting cancer of the colon and intestines.
